Synopsis

This book presents a Phoenician/Punic-Arabic dictionary, explaining what has been uncovered in its vocabulary in the Arabic language. The book meets the needs of students for its subject matter, helps them understand this language, enables them to translate what was recovered from its inscriptions, and fills a void in the Arabic library which is devoid of such a book. Accordingly, Arab intellectuals and researchers in the beauty of the Phoenician-Punic civilization can find their needs that are not being provided by foreign references, whose authors are accustomed to using their languages when studying this language’s inscriptions which is considered part of the Northwest Semitic language family, and is one of the Canaanite dialects. It was also the conversational language along the Lebanese coast, from Sidon in the north to Acre in the south. Its spread accompanied the movement of trade, expansion, and Phoenician colonization that extended from Mesopotamia to the end of the western basin of the Mediterranean. In it a dialect called Punic appeared, distinguishing it from Phoenician, the language of the Phoenician East. Punic is the result of the Phoenician being influenced by local dialects it came into contact with, such as the Libyan, Greek, and Latin dialects.
